In formal academic writing, adverbs typically occur within the verb and it is suggested that we avoid putting adverbs at the beginning or end of a sentences. In addition to the position, a single, formal vocabulary is preferred over informal prepositional phrases. The following three examples illustrate the ideas.
1. This intricate behavior is not understood in full.
Note: “in full” appears at the end of the sentence and can be considered informal as a prepositional phrase.
Revision: This intricate behavior is not completely understood.
2. OAEs are nearly used in newborn hearing screening in all places.
Note: “in all places” appears at the end of the sentence and can be considered informal as a prepositional phrase.
Revision: OAEs are nearly universally used in newborn hearing screening
Comment: It’s OK to put two adverbs together.
3. In most cases, the process takes three days.
Note: “In most cases” appears at the beginning of the sentence and can be considered informal as a prepositional phrase.
